Je Woo Kim

Rise of Seoul

South Korea's rise from postwar devastation to global economic power stands as one of the most consequential developments of the twentieth century. The Rise of Seoul examines South Korea's ascent from poverty to power through the lived experience of engineer and entrepreneur Je Woo Kim. Drawing on South Korean history, economics, education policy, and government strategy, Kim argues that the country's growth was driven by disciplined economic development, effective governance, and coordinated action among the state, industry, and an extraordinarily dedicated population. He highlights how investments in mass education, meritocratic advancement, and technology-intensive industries created a foundation for both rapid growth and broad-based opportunity. From the devastation left by colonial rule and the Korean War to export-led industrialization, democratization, and digital innovation, Kim presents a structured study of how a nation can transform itself through robust institutions, technological upgrading, and the collective will of its people. South Korea's dual achievements-building a dynamic market economy while consolidating a competitive democracy under conditions of scarce natural resources, geopolitical tension, and internal political turmoil-stand out as one of the twentieth century's most remarkable national success stories. In recent decades, the global spread of Korean culture, from K-pop and film to cuisine and design, has further extended the country's influence, enabling South Korea to project both hard and soft power on the world stage.
