Queen Elizabeth in Drama

First published in 1950, Queen Elizabeth in Drama presents a collection of essays centered on Queen Elizabeth and Shakespeare, exploring movements and institutions originating in Tudor and early Stuart times as reflected in the literature of the period, particularly drama. The volume includes essays on such subjects as the evidence of Shakespeare's reading as revealed in the plays; a more specialized discussion of Shakespeare's treatment of classical legend and history; the debt of Elizabethan poets and playwrights to the works of Ovid; the Revels Office and Edmund Tilney; Sir Thomas Bodley and his library; and a fascinating account-which gives the book its title-of the appearance of Queen Elizabeth as a character in English drama from her own time to the mid-twentieth century.
